In 1923 Alfons Hymer ran a repair shop that in the mid-1950s was also making tractor trailers. In 1956, Erich Bachem requested the construction of a wooden caravan of his own design. For the distribution of this type of trailers, Alfons and his son Erwin Hymer founded the ERIBA brand in 1957 in honor of the designer Erich Bachem.

At the same time, Erwin Hymer begins to develop and build the first commercialized Hymer caravan in his father's workshop with the name of Troll.

Given the success of this type of trailers, they began to produce the Eriba Touring series which is still in production today.

In 1961 it was presented the first Hymer motorhome was launched on the market, using a Borgward B611 (German car brand) as a base. In 1963, Borgward closed its doors and stopped supplying Hymer with the basis of his only motorhome model. Until 1971 they did not present the following motorhome model that was based on on a Mercedes chassis. At this time, Hymer had already built approximately 10,000 caravans.

In 1980, the Hymer and Eriba brands merged creating the CMC Caravan company.

For motorhome models, the company developed in 1980 the aluminum sandwich panel with insulation that is still used today in almost all of its vehicles.

In 1990, the Hymer AG group was created, which went public. 77% of the shares were owned by members of the Hymer family.

In April 2013, Erwin Hymer passed away and in the same month, during the course of the shareholders' meeting, the withdrawal from the stock market was decided.
